KA Leisure has introduced reformer Pilates as part of a refurbishment programme / KA Leisure
Scottish leisure trust KA Leisure has completed the first phase of a £1.2 million investment programme, using the proceeds of commercial growth to self-fund upgrades across its fitness estate.
Gyms at Auchenharvie Leisure Centre, Vikingar! Leisure Centre and The Portal have been refurbished with new cardio, strength, plate-loaded and functional training equipment, as well as new flooring, lighting, décor and layouts.
The investment also broadens KA Leisure’s fitness offer, with reformer Pilates studios at Vikingar! and The Portal and dedicated functional training areas at Auchenharvie and The Portal.
At Vikingar!, digital programming from Your Reformer is being used to extend the reformer timetable beyond instructor-led classes.
Matrix Fitness is KA Leisure’s principal equipment partner. Public procurement documents show Johnson Health Tech UK – Matrix Fitness – secured a £770,000 contract covering equipment, installation and maintenance for an initial five-year period from July 2026.
KA Leisure says several years of commercial growth and increased usage put it in a strong enough financial position to fund the wider capital programme from its own resources.
Chief executive Malcolm McPhail said: “This programme of investment is about creating modern, inspiring spaces that help our communities lead healthier and more active lives.
“The range of members and user groups required us to create dynamic spaces which appeal to all. We are delighted with the response to our upgraded gyms, new reformer Pilates studios and functional training areas.”
Equipment displaced by the refurbishment has been redistributed to colleges, children’s homes, sports clubs and community groups, while kit from The Portal has been redeployed to improve facilities at West Kilbride Campus, Walker Hall and Dalry Community Sport Hub.
KA Leisure says the long-term community value generated by the redistribution programme is expected to exceed the £1.2 million capital investment.
McPhail said: “By working with local colleges, children’s homes, sports clubs and community groups to redistribute equipment, we’ve been able to support organisations that make a real difference across North Ayrshire and maximise the value of our investment beyond our own venues.”
Phase two will turn to wellness, with a full refurbishment of the sauna at Vikingar! and a new sauna at The Portal.
