It’s really difficult to mess up a Mediterranean vanity ambassadorship, but Kimberly Guilfoyle has managed to pull it off.
Guilfoyle — the former girlfriend of Donald Trump Jr. and fundraiser for Trump’s 2020 campaign — announced that she is resigning from her post as U.S. Ambassador to Greece. “I will forever be grateful to President Donald J. Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for entrusting me with the extraordinary privilege of representing the greatest country in the history of the world,” she wrote in a lengthy statement announcing her resignation.
“While my time as Ambassador may be coming to an end, my commitment to President Trump, the America First movement, and the country I love will never end,” she added.
Shortly before the announcement, newly minted White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia announced that Guilfoyle — had been asked to resign from her post.
The decision comes amid a wave of reports of Guilfoyle’s improper conduct, including a bombshell report from The Wall Street Journal alleging that she solicited $100,000 from Trump donor Eric Deters to pay off her American Express credit card debt ahead of her Senate confirmation hearings in July 2025. Documents and messages obtained by the Journal show that Guilfoyle had offered Deters as much as $1 million in tax aid and legal relief if she was confirmed to the ambassadorship.
“Honey please I need you to get this done for me today,” she wrote Deters, noting that the transfer “won’t show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express.”
Deters told the Journal that Guilfoyle had promised to be his “Trump ride or die, forever and ever,” but “she never came through on anything.” When he informed Guilfoyle via text that he would not give her the money — assessing that it would probably bother his wife — she asked him if he would please “stop papering all these things,” by discussing them over text.
That isn’t it. In late September, The Wall Street Journal reported on the strange relationship between Guilfoyleand 39-year-old lobbyist Christos Marafatsos. The construction company lobbyist, representing the Greek firm Aktor Group, traveled frequently with Guilfoyle while she encouraged foreign contacts to work with the group. The Wall Street Journal has also reported on comments Guilfoyle made at Davos in January, bragging about her connections to wealthy Greek businessmen, private jet travel, and clout. “I’m going to make you a lot of fucking money,” she reportedly told an American businessman, whose help she was requesting in securing a seat at a dinner hosted by Eric Trump.
In her resignation, Guilfoyle rebuked the reports. “These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity,” she wrote.
On Monday, Trump told reporters that the White House was “looking into” removing Guilfoyle from the position. “We’re not happy,” he added. Vice President JD Vance added in a separate interview that he didn’t “like anybody selling access to another government official, certainly a high-level government official.”
On Tuesday, Trump continued to distance himself from Guilfoyle following her resignation.
“On Guilfoyle, she was almost a member of your family. How surprised were you to learn about these allegations,” one reporter asked the president outside of the White House.
“No, she wasn’t a member of my family,” Trump replied. “She, I guess, dated my son a long time ago.”
