Santa Clara County sheriff’s detectives are investigating a shooting Saturday at a large party in Morgan Hill that left one person dead and seven others injured, authorities said.
Deputies responded to complaints of disturbances around 10:15 p.m. involving intoxicated people in the street and one person throwing bottles at cars, Brooks Jarosz with the County of Santa Clara Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
When deputies arrived, they found a chaotic scene with more than 300 people fleeing the area after shots were fired, Jarosz said. Multiple people had been shot and required medical attention.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene.
No suspects were immediately in custody.
“This tragic and senseless violence is entirely unacceptable,” Sheriff Robert Jonsen said. “Our hearts go out to the victim’s family, those recovering from their injuries and everyone in our community affected by this traumatic event.”
Authorities described the gathering as an “unsanctioned party” that had been promoted through social media.
